When I first saw him in Good Will Hunting I was in a spin. Who was this guy? I loved every single thing about this movie and he absolutely captured my heart. When I look back at him now he seems like an absolutely baby in that film. But he has a face which is sweetness and intelligence and cheekiness personified. Like my next contestant he is in the category of Thinking Woman’s Crumpet. Would you agree?

How do you like them apples?

Cheeky!

(Playing catch up today since I missed yesterday’s post.)

Today’s entry is unsual in that it’s a sporting man and I generally do not like sport. But I do LOVE AFL and in particular my team the Sydney Swans. I’m possibly a little on the obsessive side when it comes to my Swannies. It started as a joke of sorts but has grown into something more “serious”… my Swans’ boyfriend. It’s a bit of a tradition… starting with my perv of choice going back to the 90s – Dale Lewis. Ever since I have picked a “favourite” when the previous one retires or, worse, changes clubs (no one mention Jesse White going to – SHOCK HORROR – Collingwood this year).

Ryan O’Keefe has been my favourite for some years now… probably taking the spot not long after he started in 2000. Anyway, he is definitely a bit white bread pretty for my tastes and not a single tattoo but he’s cute, seems nice, is into food (appeared on the first Celebrity Masterchef) and has been a wonderfully tenacious player for my Swannies for many years.

Behold…

This guy was on The Graham Norton Show the other night (on repeat) which re-sparked my “interest” in him. He was so much the IT factor in The Wire; isn’t he just mesmerising? He just has some magical combination of sexiness, arrogance, humour, danger and some other intanginble thing which means I can’t take my eyes off him.

#7 Idris Elba

Thoughtful...

Thoughtful…

Crumpety.

We’re still on Didn’t See This One Coming Avenue. This guy is not really my type, generally speaking… too malnourished for my liking. I fell in lust with him when I first saw Velvet Goldmine; there was just something about him and I’ve had an interest in him ever since. I think he’s a good actor and those eyes…

#6 Jonathan Rhys Meyers

With the grubby Ewan McGregor.

A little older and rougher round the edges.

So I’m going to come right out of left field here… I was compiling a working list of man candy candidates and realised 31 days is a quite a lot which means I can indulge my fully eclectic tastes. I started off with four straight out of my Top 10 but now I’m going to take a meander down Wasn’t Expecting That Lane. (Keep your comments about my weirdness polite thank you.)

#5 Harvey Keitel

A fine example of the rugged man. He may have started off on the pretty side as a young man but he’s aged wonderfully and my particular fetish is for him in The Piano. What a wonderfully sensual film; amazing. The first photo set is obviously quite recent and he looks hawt (to borrow a Mumabulous term). The other two are obviously from The Piano where he had me absolutely mesmerised.

One of my favourite blogs is Mum-abulous. She always makes me laugh. Nice to come across a blogger as shallow as me.

However, she has proclaimed August – Bore-gust – and has decided to not post any of the usual man candy she likes to tantalise us readers with on a regular basis. I’m not sure how this will help humanity my dear Mubabulous but I’m sure there’s some method to your madness. When I complained she laid down the challenge for me to take up the slack and well, a challenge is a challenge…

Since I’m starting on the 4th of the month I am playing catch up. So may I present to you four examples of man candy I personally find delicious.

#1 Anthony Kiedis

Anthony

What can I say about AK? I’ve loved him and RHCP for over 20 years. I’ve shaken his hand and looked into his eyes and as naff as it sounds he lives in my heart. Oh and he looks mighty fine without a shirt on.

#2 John Cusack

John C 2

Say Anything is my all time favourite movie. Lloyd Dobler my all time favourite character. John Cusack, the man, is probably noone I’d like to hang out with in real life but if he promised not to speak I’d do him in a millisecond.

#3 Ryan Gosling

Ryan G

Too easy. Who would not want to lick that? Yes, he’s a bit white bread for me, generally speaking, but he is a nice looking young man by anyone’s standards (there I go sounding like a grandma).

#4 Joe Manganiello

Joe M

Do I actually have to write anything here? I think not. Hottest werewolf I’ve ever seen and the sole reason I went to see Magic Mike. Is it getting hot in here?

I think I’m going to enjoy August. Come back tomorrow for the next installment.

Date Night: City and Colour

Last night The Joker and DKG had a much needed date night. Having an entertainer for a boyfriend means nights out are not very regular, being that he is often working on Friday and Saturday evenings, the most common nights for a date night.

We started with dinner at Pony Dining at The Rocks which is yet another restaurant where they’ve gone for style over substance in terms of decor. The place looks great and has a cool ambience, however… all hard surfaces makes for difficult conversation and terrible accoustics. Long tables for two placed close together to other tables means you are sitting closer to the person at the tables on your left and right than you are to your dining partner. Not ideal. Especially when your neighbours are loud Americans who are rude to the waiting staff and generally feel that everyone in the restaurant wants to know their business.

Food at Pony Dining is very good though. No complaints there. They grill well here and the place smells of the gorgeous smoke and the food tastes of it, which I guess is what you’d expect. My salmon was cooked beautifully, as was The Joker’s pork chop. My favourite thing was probably the eggplant side which, fortunately or unfortunately, kept revisiting me all evening. If I’m going to voice a tiny complaint it would be about the cocktails. We shared a jug of Polish Mule, which was vodka, some other grog, lime and ginger beer… and ICE, lots and lots of ice. It was delish and refreshing but don’t take the piss by offering a jug of cocktails (a jug the size of a small vase, not a jug by any normal standards) and then half filling it with ice. We know what you’re doing and you know that we know… so just stop it.

Anyway, dinner a reasonable success we waddled over to the ever gorgeous Sydney Opera House for the main event – City and Colour. Or more accurately City and Colour without the City or the Colour. Basically just Dallas Green. I don’t know much about this man and/or his band; this was The Joker’s choice and a fine choice. Mr Green is visually your garden variety hipster. You wouldn’t look at him twice if he passed you on King Street or sat next to you at a cafe sipping his chai latte in his ironic plaid shirt.

What sets him apart is his voice. Wow. Like Antony Hegarty, the effect when Dallas Green opens his mouth is amazing. It’s hard to believe that voice is coming out of that human. A falsetto that chills to the bones. Truly beautiful.

The standouts for me were his stunning version of Pink’s Try; the lyric with the pared back guitar and vocal – holy cow! And The Girl which I just love; simply a beautiful love song.

It was a bit much of the same thing if I’m honest but his beautiful voice and guitar playing had me mesmerised. As did the freaks in the crowd; especially the girl/s who seemed to think it was ok to constantly call out dumb shit. Shut up dickheads, we’re not here to listen to you.

One of the best things about a concert at the Opera House is the walk back to the car along the water, past Circular Quay. It always leaves me loving my home town just a little bit more and grateful for my life. It was a wonderful evening and, as ever, I’m thankful to The Joker for opening up my musical experiences.

Girls

For those following along there was a time when Miss M and I had a troubled relationship. Basically she was playing the role of Satan and I was just clinging onto sanity. It was a tough time.

But that was a long time ago and mostly things have been great, or at least good, for quite a few years now. We have our moments of angst and they are regular but they are not traumatic, not like they used to be. I no longer end up sitting on the floor in tears and she no longer spits and throws things at me. So in the immortal words of Charlie Sheen we are “winning!”.

This past weekend I had a glimpse of what the future may hold. A glimpse of mother/daughter friendship, or at least camaraderie, which was kind of sweet.

Not only did I teach her how to cook her own egg on toast for breakfast (which was really a handing over of a small but important daily self help routine tied up in a little bonding package) but she chose to come to a Sydney Swans’ game with me and we had a great girls’ day out.

050

True, she didn’t watch much of the game and quite honestly it was not a game worth watching. True, she mostly enjoyed making fun of the ridiculous noises I tend to make to encourage/frighten the Swannies during the game. But on the way home in the car she said that she loved listening to my conversations with Tricia that day and that it was one of the best days of her life. She is growing up and morphing from a little girl into a tween I guess (though I do dislike that particular marketing term for pre-teen girls). She is starting to latch onto more grown up conversations and is trying to make sense of them.

I am also starting to discuss my dating with her in a matter-of-fact way rather than keeping it as a dirty little secret. I read this interesting article about the subject this week and it gelled with my thoughts on the subject. That doesn’t mean I give her all, or any, of the gory details… but I do mention in passing that I’ve had a date and answer any questions she has. She’s really not that interested (and Will is even less interested… in fact on the weekend he said he thought I was still going out with the Joker… teenage boys, so observant).

Anyway, I just wanted to take a moment to document a little milestone in my relationship with Miss M… especially since it’s a positive one.

Thinking about someone who isn’t thinking about you

Probably the worst thing about a failed relationship (and I’ve clocked up two in twelve months so I speak with some authority) is the amount of time I spend thinking about the person who is no longer thinking about me.

I hate it. So much. But my brain just won’t stop turning over the problem, like a Rubik’s cube that won’t be solved. It is obviously an exercise in frustration and eventually even my silly brain will run out of enthusiasm for the task but in the meantime I’m seriously giving myself the shits.

There is nothing coherent about my thoughts. They swing from anger at myself for what was, in hindsight, an exercise in flogging a dead horse to sadness for the futility of throwing away a relationship with much promise. I think about the good times and my daydreams for the future. I smile to myself about the little in jokes we shared.

I waste so much emotional energy thinking about someone who isn’t thinking about me.

Can someone invent an app to fix that?
